We’re proud to announce that we’ve teamed up with the Detroit Historical Society to publish Untold Detroit: Beer, a brand new podcast that explores the history of beer in Detroit. Hosted by Billy Wall-Winkel, Assistant Curator at the Detroit Historical Museum, this six-episode series traces the roots of Detroit beer back to when the French first founded this city. After examining how different ethnic groups each made their own contributions to the city’s beer, it follows the city through Prohibition, the rise of beer beer businesses including Stroh’s, and the craft beer movement at the turn of the century.
Last week, we hosted a virtual launch party to celebrate the release of this podcast. Steve Johnson, the owner and operator of Motor City Brew Tours and the author of Detroit Beer: A History of Brewing in the Motor City, talked to Billy about what he learned during the making of this podcast. You can watch their conversation here:

This podcast is not only the first for the Detroit Historical Society, but it’s also the first podcast from any Detroit museum. Ann Delisi of 101.9 WDET interviewed Billy for her “Secret Ingredient” segment. You can hear the conversation here:
This podcast shows the power of audio to tell a deeper, richer story in a way that’s both educational and entertaining. We hope you enjoy it.
